Anthony Awarded Chris Mitchum Memorial Scholarship

The Southern Union Foundation is pleased to award the Chris Mitchum Memorial Scholarship to Alex Anthony from Handley High School.  Sponsored and funded by the Law Firm of Kesa M. Johnston, the scholarship was established to promote the education and advancement of a Randolph County or Roanoke City School student who will attend Southern Union State Community College pursuing a degree or certification in the performing or fine arts. Johnston said she created the scholarship to honor the life and work of her dear friend, Chris Mitchum, by offering a financial award to visionary students wishing to better their communities through art, music architecture, and revitalization. CLEAR THE LIST AIMS TO HELP LOCAL TEACHERS OVER THE SUMMER

LEE COUNTY (June 20, 2024) – The Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) has begun its second annual “Clear the List” program to help teachers within Lee County fulfill their classroom wish lists. So far, over 150 teachers have submitted wish lists for this program, and more are expected to be submitted throughout the summer.   Every year, teachers spend money out of their pockets to make their classrooms the best possible learning environment for their students. While they are given some funds from the state for classroom supplies, the amount they receive is often not enough to cover anything beyond the most basic necessities. Clear the List aims to fill in the gaps between state funding and what teachers are spending from their own money/paychecks by gathering donations from local businesses and community members.   The Lanett Board of Education has named Nannette Culwell as Principal of Lanett High School. "I am excited to be chosen as the new principal of Lanett High School. For the past four years, I have been serving as the Assistant Principal of Lanett High School. I also have over 14 years of educational experience. I am a native of Lanett, Alabama and graduated from Lanett High School in 2001. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work, Master of Arts degree in Teaching, and an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership. I am blessed to be the mother of three, Christian, Kaedence, and Vincent", said Culwell. Lanett City Schools welcomes Dr. Sylvia Haslam as principal of W.O. Lance Elementary School

Dr. Sylvia Haslam was born in Columbus, GA and raised in the small town of Clayton, AL. She graduated from Clayton High School with honors and continued the family tradition of attending Troy University, Troy AL. She received a dual bachelor’s degree in K-6 Elementary Education and K-6 Collaborative Education. Later, Dr. Haslam earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Phoenix, Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Haslam is extremely honored to join Lanett City Schools as principal at W.O. Lance Elementary School. She looks forward to working with the faculty and staff to continue advancing educational experiences for students.
