Joel Davidson & Carson Champion Named Mr. and Miss Springwood High School

Last week, Springwood Seniors  Joel Davidson & Carson Champion  were selected as this year's  Mr. and Miss SHS. The distinction of Mr. and Miss SHS is a Wildcat tradition and is a recognition received annually by one male and one female student who is a member of the senior class. They are selected by the senior class and faculty and staff. The following attributes are considered in the selection process: 1. Character - Positive role model, kind, friendly 2. Attitude – Goal-oriented, enthusiastic, respectful of school policies 3. Trustworthy – Maintains high integrity 4. Behavior & Conduct – Exemplary, free of major discipline infractions 5. Academics – Maintains (at minimum) a 3.0 GPA 6. Leadership – Willing and able to lead others by taking initiative 7. School spirit – Participates in extra-curricular activities 8. CCSD For Two Hour District Wide Delayed Start For Thursday Morning Following VHS Game

The Chambers County School District is announcing plans to implement a delayed start for Thursday, March 2, 2023.  All schools in the district will have a two-hour delay on Thursday morning.  The purpose of the delayed start will be to provide everyone across the district the opportunity to support the Valley High School Varsity Boys Basketball Team in their Final Four State Championship Semi-Final appearance.   The Class 5A undefeated Valley Rams will make their appearance at the Legacy Arena in the BJCC located in Birmingham on Wednesday, March 1, 2023.  The semifinal matchup is the last game on the slate for the day with game time set for 7:30 p.m. CST or 8:30 p.m. EST.  The Central Division VHS Champions are paired up against the Scottsboro Wildcats who were the winners of the Northeast Regional in Jacksonville.  This is the Ram's first return trip to the Final Four since 2001.  It is our hope that all of Chambers County will be able to make i...

Students performed a variety of skits which included readings and songs from Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream", and "Freedom, Freedom let it ring", to tributes to Harriet Tubman, and more. The multi-generational SU athletes are shown at a Bison Baseball game.  Story by Katie Jackson Being part of a sports team is often likened to being part of a family, but for four Southern Union State Community College athletes, being a Bison is truly a family affair.  Those four are Ricky, Christy, Thomas, and Savannah Collins, two generations of Collinses from Newnan, Ga., that have found personal and professional success through Southern Union’s athletic program. Their family story began in 1993 when Ricky, an All-American high-school baseball player, arrived at SU’s Wadley campus from his hometown of Stockbridge, Ga. A standout pitcher and hitter, Ricky had already been chosen by the Texas Rangers in the 1993 Amateur Draft, but he and two of his fellow high-school baseball team members wanted a chance to develop further before going pro. Charles E. Battle Scholarship established through Southern Union Foundation

Wendy Battle makes the initial donation to the SU Foundation for the establishment of the Charles E. Battle Scholarship.  Receiving the donation is Shondae Brown.  The Southern Union State Community College Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the Charles E. Battle Scholarship. Established by his family, the award honors the memory of the late Charlie Battle, who served as transportation director at Southern Union. Battle was born and raised in Randolph County, Alabama, and devoted 46 years of service to Southern Union State Community College. He was loved by many including his family, friends, and co-workers.  “During his time at SUSCC, he encouraged many students to pursue their goals through all walks of life,” said Battle’s daughter Wendy.  “The Charles E. LANGDALE- On Saturday, Huguley Elementary hosted its second annual Sweetheart Pageant from the historic Langdale Auditorium. The Sweetheart Pageant is a fundraiser for Huguley Elementary and is one of their biggest. The Pageant was comprised of three categories which included Little Miss Sweetheart, Young Miss Sweetheart, and Preteen Miss Sweetheart. Winners in those categories are as follows: According to Huguley Elementary, the Sweetheart Pageant was a huge success for the school.

Southern Union Generates $150M Annual Economic Impact

  (WADLEY) — Students and alumni of colleges within the Alabama Community College System add $6.6 billion to Alabama’s economy, supporting one out of every 27 jobs in the state, according to an economic impact report released Monday. The independent, 102-page report by LightCast estimates the Alabama Community College System directly impacts 98,923 jobs in the state, representing about 2.7% of Alabama’s gross state product. Additionally, taxpayers see a net benefit of $1.1 billion in added tax revenue from students’ higher lifetime earnings and increased output to businesses. The results of this economic impact study reinforce that Southern Union State Community College is a major contributor to the economic base of the communities that it serves in jobs created, business volume generated, and personal income earned. CCSD Hosts Fishing University Presentation At Valley High School

On Thursday, February 9th, the Chambers County School District an exciting assembly at Valley High School in cooperation with the Greater Valley Area Chamber of Commerce. The assembly brought the Fishing University Program featured on the Outdoor Television Channel to the VHS gymnasium. The goal of the team from Fishing University was to provide a one-hour educational program to inform students about the importance of their education and share perspectives of various outdoor careers available to them. Valley High School Seniors and Juniors heard first-hand experiences from multiple professionals about opportunities that could seek out for their own career paths. Valley High School also hosts the area schools largest bass fishing team membership. Fishing University legend, Charlie Ingram served as the host for the program sponsored by the GVACC Director, Mrs. Carrie Wood.
