Chambers County School District Host Dedication Ceremony for The JROTC Power Program
The Chambers County School District is excited to share a historic milestone that was observed prior to the Valley High School Rams victory over Dadeville High School on Thursday, October 31st, 2024. The JROTC Color Guard formed at midfield for a special ceremony to dedicate the Chambers County School District’s JROTC program in memory of a beloved former teacher and coach, Mr. Michael Frederic Power. Coach Power, a former JROTC cadet during his studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology, was later commissioned as a Logistics Officer in the United States Marine Corps, where he served honorably for four years. During his tenure as an educator at Valley High School, Coach Power served as a dedicated math teacher and coach working with JV football, JV basketball and golf teams.
Valley High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, Adam Hunter shared the following as part of the dedication ceremony: “Words cannot describe what Coach Power meant to our school system, community and to myself. I was honored to be able to call Mike Power a coach, a loving Father, a God loving man, but most importantly I was able to call him a Friend. The impact Coach had on our school system during his time here with us was amazing. I am honored to have known him and I am a better person because of him.”
VHS Guidance Counselor, Dr. Tolandra Harris additionally shared these words on behalf of Coach Power: “Mike Power was a beacon of light, love, and inspiration to Valley High School. He was a Math teacher who not only had a strong grasp of the subject but also possessed the ability to engage and inspire all of his students, adapt to their needs, and create a supportive learning environment in his classroom. He was encouraging. He spoke with clarity. He was patient, kind, and always positive. Mr. Power will always be remembered as a great co-worker, a great friend, a great husband and father, and the most outstanding Math Teacher.”
During his time at Valley High School and in the Chambers County community, Coach Power left a lasting impact on his students, coworkers, and community. It is our privilege to honor his memory and legacy tonight as we officially dedicate the JROTC program in his name as “The Chambers County School District JROTC Power Program.” Furthermore, to commemorate Coach Power’s enduring legacy, the JROTC will recognize outstanding male and female cadets each year who exemplify the leadership, service, and citizenship that he embodied.
Following the remarks during the ceremony, Valley High School Principal, Mr. Troy Kelley presented a plaque to Sergeant First Class Campbell, officially naming the program the JROTC Power Program and the Power Program Cadets of the Year to be recognized annually during the spring awards ceremony. Coach Power’s family has been invited to present the Cadet of the Year awards at the Valley High School spring awards ceremony, recognizing those cadets who best reflect his values and spirit. Following the dedication ceremony and the honoring of Coach Michael Power, the JROTC cadets at midfield presented the colors of the National Anthem.
